Xiamen is a bustling city that has a relaxing coastal charm with a population of 1.3M. The city was known as Amoy in earlier times when the Ming established a major seaport and commercial centre. Portuguese, British, French and Dutch influenced development from the 16th century. The city was occupied by the Japanese from 1938 until 1945. The neighbouring island of Gulang Yu is an enchanting retreat without a single car on the island and can only be reached by ferry.
