Quanzhou, once a great port city on the maritime silk road, is often compared with Xian for its importance in ancient trade and cultural richness. The city of Quanzhou was founded as early as 718AD. While other areas of China were still undeveloped, the "Coraltree City" (old name for Quanzhou,) had already grown into one of the world's biggest sea ports in the Tang Dynasty. Modern Quanzhou is a city of contrasts. While still having lots of back alleys with little shops and merchants there are also the shopping strips selling the latest fashions, electronics, DVDs and music, etc
